Salt Lake City Utah businessman and civic leader Kem Gardner and his wife Carolyn have pledged $3 million to help build and equip the new Women's and Newborn Center at Intermountain Medical Center, Intermountain Healthcare's new medical campus being built in Murray. The new 218,000 square-foot center will be called the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women's and Newborn Center. It will be one of the most advanced women's and newborn hospitals in the nation with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and treatment capabilities provided by obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, family practitioners, and perinatologists, who specialize in high-risk pregnancies. A full range of prenatal, maternity, and labor and delivery services will be available at the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women's and Newborn Center, including a 48-bed neonatal intensive care unit that will serve babies from throughout the Western United States. "We are thrilled to contribute to Intermountain Medical Center and to be associated with an incredibly vital program that will be a wonderful resource for families throughout the Intermountain region," says Kem Gardner. "As a family, we are proud that the women's center will be named after Carolyn, who is a wonderful wife and mother, and who serves our community in so many ways." "This is a wonderful gift that will serve as a lasting legacy to the Gardner family's generosity and desire to make our community a better place to live," says H. Gary Pehrson, regional vice president for Intermountain Healthcare. It's anticipated that more than 4,200 babies will be born annually at the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women's and Newborn Center at Intermountain Medical Center. Among those, more than 1,000 babies are expected to be treated in the neo-natal intensive care unit. The center will also be home to the Janice Beesley Hartvigsen Breast Care Center and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation Labor and Delivery Unit. The Intermountain Medical Center, currently being constructed on a 100-acre site at 5300 South and State Street, will become Intermountain's flagship facility and is scheducled to open in 2007. The 1.3 million square-foot medical center will include four other medical centers of excellence in addition to the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women's and Newborn Center.
