Since 1993, the Utah Artificial Heart Program has been caring for patients and their families throughout Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Wyoming.
Left Ventricular Assist Devices are life saving, state-of-the-art devices that give meaning to living life with heart failure. LVAD patients return to a quality of life, which includes: regaining independence, driving, returning to work, socializing, and traveling by ground, air, or water.
In June 2007, this "Center of Excellence" achieved a milestone of implanting its 200th patient.
To better serve our LVAD patients, the hospital has three "LVAD apartments", located within a few blocks of Intermountain Medical Center. The apartments provide patients and their caregivers with a home-like environment and an opportunity to adjust to living life with an LVAD. The apartments also allow the patient to temporarily be close to the hospital for support, further discharge education, and medical follow-up.
There is a small daily charge to those staying at the LVAD apartments.
These websites offer additional information about heart failure, artificial heart technology, and research.
