For the first time ever, Intermountain Healthcare is opening a comprehensive pulmonary chest clinic. Located in the J.L. Sorenson Heart and Lung Center at the new Intermountain Medical Center, the new chest clinic is named in honor of Dwayne Schmidt, MD, a pulmonologist and one of the founders of the pulmonary and critical care programs at LDS Hospital.
The three pillars of the Schmidt Chest Clinic are research, education, and clinical practice. Although none of these components is new to Intermountain, grouping them together in a single clinic is.
Patients are referred to the Schmidt Chest Clinic from throughout the Intermountain West, and the clinic is a regional resource for information on and treatment of pulmonary hypertension, obstructive lung diseases (like emphysema and asthma), interstitial lung disease, and other complicated lung problems.
The clinic provides a full complement of diagnostic tools, including pulmonary function tests and respiratory and cardiovascular stress testing, as well as diagnostic procedures.
Interdisciplinary research at the Schmidt Chest Clinic includes government-sponsored, industry-sponsored, and investigator-initiated clinical trials and contracts.
