Osler's Cloak Award

Recipients of the Osler's Cloak Award - March 6, 2006 - Wayne H. Cannon, M.D., Ilene Tippets, RN, MSN, Steven R. Towner, MD and Brenda Reiss-Brennan, MS, APRN, CS

  • About 7% of al Americans -- almost 15 million people -- have diabetes mellitus. Unchecked, diabetes is one of our worst chronic disease killers. It is a primary source of blindness (diabetic retinopathy), kidney failure leading to dialysis and transplant, foot amputation (peripheral neuropathy that evolves into pedal decubitus ulcers), and heart disease. Over the past 8 years, the Primary Care Clinical Program has shown consistent progress in the management of diabetes, both in testing rates and blood sugar control. Their results today are nothing short of stunning. Across more than 30,000 diabetics, the proportion of Intermountain patients with high-risk, poorly controlled blood sugar levels (HbA1c > 9%) have fallen from almost 35% to only 7%. Levels of control that were judged impossible just 5 years ago, are now routine -- not just in single specialty practices, but across the entire Intermountain primary care system. The team has achieved similar results for chronic anticoagulation, implementing modern statistical process control measurement and management techniques to greatly improve anticoagulation control and reduce health risks, while significantly reducing costs.
  • The same team developed protocols for the detection and successful management of depression and other psychiatric disabilities in an outpatient setting. They improved the rate of detection of depression by more than 20 percent. They developed and implemented a treatment cascade that demonstrably improved patient functional status outcomes. They showed that detecting and treating depression in an outpatient setting reduces medical and surgical treatments for somatic illness, reducing the total cost of care.

Date for the next Osler's Cloak Award -- Excellence in Caring and Curing will be forthcoming.
