Developing a Culture of Patient Safety

This course has been constructed to help build a common framework for coordinated and improved patient safety strategies within the Intermountain Healthcare system.

Course content is focused on discussion about core principles of process management critical to the success of patient safety strategies and tools physicians can use to improve patient outcomes. The course builds upon the foundation of integrated clinical research and ongoing professional learning explored in "An Introduction to Clinical Quality Improvement" course.
Objectives for Developing a Culture of Patient Safety

This 14-hour course is for Intermountain Healthcare clinical leaders. Registration is required.

Objectives:
  • Provide a working vocabulary of critical analysis tools including root cause analysis, observational techniques and human factors
  • Recognition of how system failures create errors
  • Discuss safety mesures -- what and how to measure and manage assignable and random variation
  • Share tools that clinicians can use to improve patient safety and outcomes
  • Discuss opportunities for clinicians to participate in the formulation and implementation of Intermountain's patient safety strategies
  • Describe skills to help clinicians develop personal responsibility for process management, patient safety and change
Goals:
  • To provide current and continually updated information to clinicians for the purpose of maintaining and expanding their cognitive and technical skills
  • To improve the quality and efficiency of patient care
  • To provide cost effective practice patterns with the appropriate utilization of facilities and resources
  • To provide a framework for appropriate ethical and moral medical decision-making


Accreditation
  • Intermountain Healthcare Continuing Medical Education is accredited by Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
  • Intermountain Healthcare Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 15.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Course Schedule
The course is a two-day session which is held on Thursday & Friday and begins at 8:00 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by presentations at 8:30 a.m. Sessions conclude each day at 5:00 p.m. This course has been constructed to help build a common framework for coordinated clinical practice improvement within the Intermountain Healthcare System.

Training sessions will be held at Intermountain's Corporate Offices, 36 South State Street (Key Bank Tower, formerly Beneficial Life Tower), 16th Floor, in downtown Salt Lake City.
