- Redness or pinkness of the white of the eye (sclera) and inner eyelids.
- Eye may be watery (increased tears.)
- Eyelid may be puffy or mildly swollen.
- No pus or other discharge.
Cause
- Viral infection (part of a cold).
- Eye allergies from pollens
- Other common causes:Chemical conjunctivitis from irritants (e.g., chlorinated pool water, smoke, smog or sunscreen, etc).
Note: Conjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition of the membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eyes.
Return to School - Pink eye with a watery discharge is harmless and mildly contagious. Children with colds in the eye do not need to miss any day care or school.
