Salt Lake City About one in 20 people experience grief due to the loss of a loved one. And more than a million people worldwide commit suicide. In the United States alone, suicides outnumber homicides by 3 to 2.
But there is help. LDS Hospital is offering two support groups for those dealing with grief or coping with loss, and for those who have been impacted by suicide. Both groups are free and open to adults and teens. "The holidays and post-holiday period can be especially difficult for people who have lost of loved one or who have been affected by suicide," says Helen Rollins, director of bereavement services at LDS Hospital. "We want to help make resources available to those who want and need some assistance dealing with their feelings of grief and loss." Both support groups are free, and include educational materials for participants. The suicide support group is open to all adults and teens who have been impacted by suicide. It will be held every Tuesday beginning January 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Murray, 244 East Myrtle Street, which is one block north of the State Street entrance to Murray Park. Enter through the Teen Club entrance. The grief and loss support group will be held Tuesdays at 11 a.m. starting on January 22 and running through February 22. The group will meet at the LDS Hospital Education Center, 8th Avenue and C Street, in Salt Lake City. Registration is not required. If you have questions, please contact Helen Rollins at LDS Hospital at (801) 408-5661.
