Geriatrics Division Protocols

A distinguishing feature of geriatric medicine is the paradigm shift from a disease-oriented to a function-oriented approach to care. Included in the function-oriented model are social, psychological, cognitive, and mobility factors that are not often considered within the more traditional disease-oriented approach to care.

This new paradigm is supported by published studies showing that the use of formal functional assessment tools improves the recognition of common geriatric syndromes and diagnoses such as dementia, delirium, depression, incontinence, and falls. Furthermore, once recognized, the treatment of these conditions is associated with lower medical costs, improved survival, reduced hospital and nursing home stays, and improved functional status and quality of life.
