Helicopters Life Flight operates four helicopters: Two Agusta A109 K2's provide the performance requirements for Life Flight's high altitude and hoist mission profile, and two versatile and cost effective Bell 407's supplement the K2's for interfacility and some selected SAR missions.
The helicopters are based at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, and in Salt Lake City providing support for both LDS Hospital and Primary Children's Medical Center.
The program is CAMTS certified. The standard team consists of a flight nurse and a paramedic. Specialty care is provided by pediatric and neonatal flight nurses depending on the patient and mission. Our helicopters travel between 120 and 150 mph, fixed wing aircraft travel at 325 mph.
Fixed Wing Aircraft Life Flight operates three Beechcraft B200 King Air fixed wing aircraft, two based at Salt Lake International Airport and one at the Dixie Airport. These flying intensive care units are staffed by CAMTS certified flight nurses, intensive care unit nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatric and neonatal specialty nurses. These flight teams provide exceptional critical health care to patients throughout the west.
Additional equipment In addition to their aircraft, Life Flight uses other highly specialized equipment, like night vision goggles. Intermountain Life Flight began using night vision goggles (NVG) in July of 2004. The program was designed to improve night capabilities and enhance flight safety. All pilots and medical crewmembers including pediatric and neonatal nurses were required to complete an extensive ground and flight-training program.
Night vision goggles allow the flight team to identify hazards during night operations as well as enhance the crew's ability to find and locate stranded hikers and search and rescue personnel. The flight crew uses small handheld lasers during NVG operations to identify landmarks, trails and roadways. Ground teams use the lasers to mark landing zones, hazards or identifiers for the flight team. Night vision goggles give the pilot and crew 25/20 vision and work well even with low light levels.
