Almost 65 percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese. Excessive weight increases the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea and other breathing problems, and cancers of the endometrium, brest, prostate and colon. Research shows that even small decreases in weight help to improve health and reduce the risk of disease. Weight loss improves health by decreasing blood pressure, glucose levels, insulin levels, triglyceride levels, and LDL cholesterol levels; increasing HDL cholesterol levels (the good one) and quality of life scores.
