Sick Leave, Maternity & Paternity Leave
The Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 mandates that up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave may be taken. However, we also comply with regulations of the American Board of Family Practice, which require a resident to make up any one-month or longer absence from the program at the end of the three-year training period before they may take the family medicine certification exam.

Thus, 12 weeks of unpaid leave may be taken in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act, but the resident may be unable to take his/her board certification exam until the year following the completion of the residency training.
