Orem, UtahAfter watching her son Mason progress farther than many ever thought he would, Kerry Shaw is giving something back to the rehabilitation program that has been such a big part of her family's life.

Shaw has gathered volunteers and gallons of donated paint in order to give the treatment rooms at the Utah Valley Pediatric Rehabilitation Center a much-needed dose of energy and imagination. The volunteer crew will be working on an African safari room, a space room, a tree room, an aquarium room and a butterfly room on Thursday, September 21, starting at 4 p.m. Utah Valley Pediatric Rehabilitation is located at 331 N. 400 West, on the campus of Orem Community Hospital.

Born at just 27 weeks gestation, Mason suffered from collodion baby syndrome as well as brain injuries that left him with vision and hearing impairments, a rare skin disorder and hypertonicity or stiffness of his muscles. Through a lot of care and effort from his parents and numerous medical professionals, Mason finally reached the point where he could roll himself around. His therapy sessions at Utah Valley Pediatric Rehabilitation are now focusing on learning to take steps and slowly bearing more weight on his feet. His parents hope someday he'll be able to get himself around their home with the use of a small, standard walker.
