Raising a child can be the most difficult job you will ever have. Many parenting frustrations can be alleviated through a positive approach to discipline. With patience, love and practice, discipline can be a valuable experience for both parent and child. These helpful tips are brought to you by the Hold on to Dear Life® campaign at Primary Children's Medical Center.
Positive discipline teaches children responsibility.
Effective discipline increases self-esteem in your child. Fear, guilt, humiliation and anger are ineffective punishments.
It's impossible for you to make sensible discipline choices if you are thinking irrationally. Step back from the situation until you are calm.
Use love and patience with infants.
Infants do not understand discipline of any kind.
Shaking an infant is dangerous. Never, never, never shake an infant.
Hitting and spanking create fear rather than respect and teach children to use violence.
Set clear, reasonable limits for your child.
