Sports Nutrition

What, how much, and when we eat determines many outcomes of our daily activities. A growing athlete needs adequate calories and nutrients to balance the energy demands of repetitive training, competition, recovery, and growth. Improper dietary habits can result in depletion, fatigue, muscle wasting, and greater risk for injury and illness. For the elite athlete, failure to provide the necessary fuels in daily training may lead to less than optimal training adaptation.

For the patient undergoing rehabilitation after injury and/or surgery, nutrition can play a meaningful role in the healing process. Deficiencies in calories, carbohydrates, proteins, essential fatty acids, certain vitamins, and minerals can slow rehabilitation and may lead to recurrent complications. On the other hand, excessive body weight often aggravates orthopedic problems, often resulting in premature surgery. Excessive body weight also increases the load on bones, joints, and ligaments and may interfere with successful rehabilitation. Adopting a healthy life style, including regular physical activity and balanced dietary habits, not only facilitates recovery but also remains one of our best companions on the path to overall wellness and longevity.
