Provo, Utah—Local heroes are a precious asset in the community, and Intermountain Healthcare has chosen to preserve one hero's legacy by renaming its Provo family health clinic in his honor.

Merrill Gappmayer, a volunteer trustee of Intermountain Healthcare for more than 30 years and a nationally recognized healthcare advocate, will receive one of Intermountain's highest honors when the Utah Valley Family Medicine Center becomes the "Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Center" Tuesday. But Gappmayer, an Orem resident, is no ordinary volunteer. His selfless service over the past few decades has ensured excellent healthcare for individuals and families not only in the Utah Valley community, but throughout the United States.

Gappmayer, who works as a land developer in Utah County, has devoted much of his past 30 years to defining and promoting the best practices in healthcare governance on a national level. He was recognized as Modern Healthcare magazine's National Trustee of the Year Award in 1996 and given the American Hospital Association's National Trustee of the Year Award in 2005.

Gappmayer launched his service career for Intermountain Healthcare as a Governing Board member of Orem Community Hospital in 1976. He continued to serve on the governing boards of Orem Community Hospital and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center over the next several years until he joined Intermountain's Board of Trustees in 1988, and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2002 until this year. Gappmayer also held several leadership positions as a delegate to the American Hospital Association.

Beyond his extraordinary leadership and professional service, Gappmayer is known for his graciousness, kindness and great personal warmth and concern for others. He gives generously of his time and expertise, and is always inspiring others to do their best.

A reception will be held in Gappmayer's honor on July 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Center, 475 West 940 North, Provo, followed by the official renaming of the family medicine center.
