Provo, UtahProstate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Utah, excluding minor skin cancers. Intermountain Healthcare is marking National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with free screenings in Provo at the Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Center on Thursday, September 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Regular, annual screenings for cancer are recommended for men age 50 years and older. Those with a strong family history of prostate cancer in younger men may start screening for prostate cancer earlier at age 40. "Early detection can make a huge difference for many cancer patients. I can't stress how important it is that men have regular screenings," said David Flinders, MD, assistant director of the Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Clinic. "If we can catch most cancer early, there are many treatment options available." Prostate screenings include a PSA blood test and Digital Rectal Exam as well as counseling from a doctor. Some of the symptoms associated with prostate cancer include frequent urination, especially at night; inability to urinate; trouble starting or holding back urination; a weak or interrupted flow of urine; painful or burning urination; blood in the urine or semen; painful ejaculation; and frequent pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs. These symptoms may be associated with prostate cancer. Sometimes they are not. It is important to follow up with a doctor. To schedule an appointment for a free prostate screening, call the Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Center at 357-7930. The Merrill Gappmayer Family Medicine Clinic is located at 475 West 940 North in Provo.
