Provo, UtahFamilies searching for a new way to help their children reach a healthy weight and then maintain it will want to sign up for the "LiVe Healthy Habits for Kids" program now being offered at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Under this new program, families can choose one-on-one counseling sessions with a dietitian or attend group classes with 15-20 other people, including kids and their families. Cost for nine counseling sessions is $425 per family while the cost for nine group classes is $225 per family.

At the counseling sessions, a dietitian trained in weight management evaluates the family's diet, physical activity, eating environment and nutrition status. Families can schedule their appointments at their own pace and topics are personalized to their needs and lifestyles. To complete the program, a family needs to schedule nine sessions in a 12-month period.

At the group classes, a dietitian trained in weight management leads the class, which includes presentations, games, cooking demonstrations and other activities. Participants will also take part in different physical activities during some classes. To complete the program, a family needs to attend nine group classes in a 12-month period.

Information in the "LiVe Healthy Habits for Kids" program is centered on three areas – nutrition, physical activity and behavior. Class topics may include the USDA Food Guide, nutrients and the body, family meals, physical activity ideas, limiting screen time, self-esteem, body acceptance, emotional eating and intuitive eating. The program also focuses on the following eight habits shown to build a healthy weight and lifestyle:

  • Nutrition: Eat breakfast every day. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Limit, or eliminate, sweetened drinks.
  • Activity: Increase your physical activity. Reduce your screen time (TV, video games).
  • Behavior: Eat meals together as a family. Be positive about food. Don't criticize about weight.
Families interested in the "LiVe Healthy Habits for Kids" program should call 357-8143 for more information or to register.
