Programs and Initiatives
Throughout its 20-year history, the Foundation has provided support for numerous health care services. Learn more about some of the important programs and initiatives that have been made possible through donations to the Celebration of Health Foundation in the following areas:
Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Center at American Fork Hospital
A new season of hope is beginning for cancer patients in north Utah County with the opening of the new Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Center at American Fork Hospital. The new center is a comprehensive cancer facility, offering chemotherapy, radiation therapy, an education center and access to the latest cancer research and clinical trials. For cancer patients who are often ill immediately following treatments, the saved time and travel afforded by receiving care close to home has proven to be a truly significant benefit. Of the $3.9 million total project cost, the Celebration of Health Foundation has committed to raise $1 million to support the new center.
Utah Valley Regional Emergency and Trauma Services Expansion
Utah Valley Regional Medical Center houses one of the largest and busiest emergency departments in Utah, serving individuals and families throughout Utah County and Southern Utah. With recent improvements including enhanced trauma protocols, 24-hour coverage of medical specialties and Life Flight services, Utah Valley Regional is treating more critically injured patients than ever before. To provide the best treatment possible, a $6.2 million expansion and renovation of the Utah Valley Regional Emergency Department has begun.
The Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation is raising $625,000 to help complete the expansion which, when finished, will nearly double the size of the current facility. The project, includes the creation of 12 additional treatment rooms, two fully-equipped trauma rooms, new waiting rooms and a "fast-track" area to facilitate the treatment of patients with less severe injuries. With a larger, more technologically advanced Emergency Department, the planned expansion will improve the quality of emergent care in Utah Valley while also allowing faster diagnosis and treatment.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
In June 1998, rehabilitation staff at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center worked together with Intermountain Primary Children's Medical Center to bring pediatric rehabilitation services to Utah County. Due to the great demand for these services, however, the program rapidly outgrew its original home, resulting in children being placed on waiting lists for several months before being able to begin treatment. To help all children receive access to the therapy they need, the Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation successfully completed a $1 million campaign to create a new home for pediatric rehabilitation services in Utah County. Features of the new center include five activity gyms, five treatment rooms, a training kitchen and an outdoor therapeutic playground. The larger home now accommodates the treatment of twice as many children with special needs such as cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, autism, developmental delays, feeding or speech disorders and other physical disabilities. Newborn Intensive Care Services
Through the Celebration of Health Foundation, thousands of dollars have been provided for newborn intensive care services within Utah Valley. Recently, the Foundation provided more than $60,000 for the purchase of eight high-frequency oscillating ventilators at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, which provide life-saving care for hundreds of infants born each year with respiratory complications. Additional equipment provided by the Foundation includes a respirator for the new Level II Newborn Intensive Care Nursery at American Fork Hospital and a BiliBlanket Plus Phototherapy System with Transilluminator (used to treat babies who have developed jaundice and assist in diagnosing a collapsed lung) at Utah Valley Regional.
The Foundation has also provided more than $40,000 over the past four years to assist the Newborn ICU's Common Bonds parent network, a vital program that provides peer support for families experiencing a birth crisis. Thanks to funding from Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Foundation has also been able to provide the funds needed to furnish the Parent Lounge and two Parent Sleep/Transition Rooms at Utah Valley Regional.
Family Guest House
The Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation completed a $1.4 million capital campaign to construct the Family Guest House, conveniently located across the street from Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. The Family Guest House is a home-away-from-home, where people who live outside of the Utah Valley area can stay while they or their loved one receives medical care at local Intermountain Healthcare hospitals. Since its opening in March 1999, more than 2,000 individuals and families have been able to enjoy the warm surroundings of the Family Guest House as they face difficult medical circumstances. With nearly full occupancy every night, current donations to the Family Guest House help the Foundation to provide continued support for additional supplies and maintenance. Chapel
We are pleased to now have an interfaith Chapel at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where patients, family members, friends and staff may go to find a moment to meditate, pray or sit in silent reflection. Through a gift of $100,000 from the Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation, the chapel was completed and dedicated in March 2000. Since that time, the Foundation has continued to provide funding for supplies needed to enhance chapel services. Our hope is that this sanctuary will continue to act as a place of comfort, spiritual strength and healing for years to come.
Children's health
The Utah Valley Healthcare Foundation is dedicated to support programs aimed at bettering the health of children and youth in our community. Support of pediatric services has included the gift of three new Nintendo Fun Centers placed in the Pediatrics Units at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and American Fork Hospital, an upgrade of the Utah Valley Regional Pediatrics central cardiac/respiratory monitoring system, supplies for the Pediatric Pre-operative Tour program at Utah Valley Regional, and numerous "Fun Boxes" filled with toys and games designed to help put children at ease while receiving care at our local Intermountain Healthcare hospitals. Through generous donations from Ronald McDonald House Charities, furnishings and supplies for the Pediatric Playroom and Parent Sleep Rooms (an invaluable resource for parents of young patients) have been provided.
Throughout the past five years, the Foundation has provided more than $36,000 to sponsor the Family Health & Safety Fair, an event focused on teaching children and their families vital information about health, safety and injury prevention. In its short history, more than 4,000 bicycle helmets have been given to children who have successfully completed the Safety Fair's bicycle safety course.
The Foundation has also provided great support for health programs of our local schools, including an Otoacoustic Emissions System for administering hearing tests in the Nebo School District, sponsorship of the Suicide and Depression Conference produced by the Provo School District and gift certificates for athletic shoes given to Alpine School District junior high school students in need.
