The Utah Valley Heart Center Cardiac Rehabilitation Services
Divided into three different phases, the Cardiac Rehabilitation program works with the patient before and after a heart procedure. This program helps patients understand the lifestyle changes they need to make to ensure the best possible outcomes.
- Phase I
This takes place while the patient is still hospitalized and consists of patient/family education before the procedure, exercise following the procedure and discharge instructions. Discharge instructions include either enrollment in Phase II of the program or recovery exercises to perform at home.
- Phase II
This phase takes place in the hospital's Wellness Center on an out-patient basis. Patients are monitored as they exercise on the treadmills and bicycles. Surgical incisions, weight gain associated with fluid retention and percent of oxygen saturation are also checked regularly. Any problems are immediately brought to the attention of the patient's cardiologist or cardiac surgeon. Education is also available on stress management, diet, home exercise and coping with illness.
- Phase III
This phase helps the patient make the transition from closely monitored exercise to exercising on their own. Aerobic, strengthening and stretching exercises are emphasized. In addition to exercise, patients receive further education on heart disease and healthy lifestyles.
