Utah Valley Regional Medical Center
The Lymphedema Management Clinic at UVRMC is located in the Utah Valley Rehabilitation Center. The clinic is run by a certified lymphedema therapist.
What is lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the swelling of an area of the body, usually an arm or leg. It occurs when there is an interference with the normal flow of lymph back into the blood stream. The excess accumulation of lymph fluid in the tissues results in swelling in the limb or other parts of the body. The interference may be due to an absence, obstruction, or destruction of the lymph vessels - present at birth or acquired during life. It can also develop due to surgery, radiation, infection or injury.
How is lymphedema treated?
A combination of techniques are generally employed to reduce the swelling the patient experiences. Bandaging, corrective exercise, manual lymph drainage, massage, elevation and compression are some of the procedures used. With proper treatment lymphedema can be successfully managed, offering the patient the ability to enhance their quality of life and participate in normal activities.
