Utah Valley Regional Medical Center

The Maternal Fetal Medicine Department at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center provides consultation services to obstetricians, family practitioners and certified nurse midwives throughout the Intermountain area. Using state-of-the-art assessment and management techniques, the Perinatal Center provides optimal evaluation of both high-risk mothers and babies, and thereby enhances the care the private physician gives. The goal of the center is to augment patient care through the team efforts of the perinatologist and the private physician. Services include:

Antenatal testing
Routine antenatal testing includes the non-stress test and ultrasound quantitation of amniotic fluid. Research confirms the combination of the non-stress test with amniotic fluid volume is more predictive of fetal compromise than the non-stress test alone.

Diagnostic ultrasound
First trimester ultrasound dates the pregnancy and identifies fetal viability. Second trimester ultrasound determines the age of the fetus and reveals many birth defects of the brain, heart and spine. Third trimester ultrasound evaluates fetal growth.

Amniocenteses
Amniocenteses are performed to assess fetal lung maturity and to obtain amniotic fluid for chromosomal assessment and amniotic fluid alpha-fetoprotein assessment.

In addition to these examinations, the Perinatal Center performs advanced technical procedures that include percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, intrauterine fetal transfusion, and fetal echocardiography. Genetic counseling is performed by a periologist or a certified genetic counselor.

Maternal consultation
Specialists in the Perinatal Center consult frequently with mothers whose pregnancies are complicated by medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, twins, previous premature birth or repetitive miscarriages.
