Great healthcare requires everyone to be actively involved.
At Intermountain Healthcare, we strive to provide extraordinary care, in all its dimensions, to those we serve. We recognize we’re aiming at a moving target, because the more we learn and improve, the more opportunities we see to do even better.
We also recognize that excellent healthcare cannot simply be dispensed as a physician would prescribe a pill. Healthcare is one of humankind’s most complex undertakings, comprising innumerable processes at every level.
Yet we know some basic truths: Health is a precious state we should endeavor, above all, to preserve. When health is imperiled, we must use all our skill and science—techniques proven to be effective—to help our patients heal. We must carefully manage costs, because resources are finite. And all those involved—including patients, employers and other payers, and the community at large—have a role to play in the healing process.
At Intermountain, we recognize our role is broader than the provision of care in our various clinical settings. We are trying to reach out to people before they become patients to help them prevent illness and injury. We seek to empower our patients and health plan members to become actively involved in optimizing their health, before and after they require care. By providing information, incentives, and resources, we encourage all those involved in healthcare to do their part.
We’ve identified six key Dimensions of Care that support our aspiration of extraordinary care: Clinical Excellence; Patient Engagement; Operational Effectiveness; Physician Engagement; Community Stewardship; and Employee Engagement. In this year’s Annual Report, we show examples of efforts underway in each of these Dimensions.
