Check-In for Check-Ups: Why Regular Visits Are Worth It

Check-In for Check-Ups: Why Regular Visits Are Worth It

Visits should focus on health, not sickness. Prevention has been proven to be much more cost-effective than treatment, but America’s healthcare system is typically aimed at fighting disease, not preventing it. We practice cost-saving prevention in other areas of our lives, so why not healthcare?

Get an annual wellness check-up. The annual physical, usually covered 100% even by high-deductible plans, gives you the opportunity to meet with a physician while you’re still well. During that visit, you and your doctor can discuss topics like blood pressure control, diet and exercise, smoking cessation, mental health, and appropriate preventive screenings. These measures save lives.

Chronic medical conditions are better managed than treated. Diabetes is one condition that can be managed cost-effectively with regular, frequent visits to the doctor. A diabetes management plan could cost only a few thousand dollars per year, while an admission to the hospital (especially the ICU) could easily run into the tens of thousands. When chronic issues come up, let’s keep them under control and avoid their financial and physical tolls.

Stay healthy by sticking to a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly. Often, the basics will have more of an impact on your well-being than any amount of medicine can provide. Big changes can be hard to sustain, so start small with goals like eating at home more often, choosing healthy snacks, eliminating sugary drinks, and limiting portion sizes. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes daily, five times a week. Don’t forget to reward yourself for your successes. You can do it!
