Targeted therapy used to treat cancer must be taken exactly as prescribed. Instructions for handling the pills are also important to follow. Adding a new medication to a daily routine can take time to get used to. These tips can help.

    1.  Write down how to take the medication in your own words and have the physician or pharmacist review.
    2.  Use a calendar and mark off the day and time you take the medications.  After a while, taking your new medication will become routine.
    3.   Because some medications have special storage instructions, it may not be advisable to use a pill box.  Ask the pharmacy if your pills can be put in a bubble pack.
    4.   Report side effects right away. When side effects are managed, it is easier to take the pills.
    5.   There are organizations that can help if the medication cost is not workable for your budget. Read more about these helping programs in More About Targeted Therapy Medication.

Be sure to report any problems you are experiencing with a medication. By partnering with your healthcare team, there is likely a strategy that will work for you.
