The Link between Research and Delivering High-Value Patient Care

High value healthcare at Intermountain means achieving the best medical result at the lowest necessary cost. In order to be of high value to our patients, care must be customer-focused, which means accessible (convenient hours and locations, as well as affordable), responsive (free from non-essential delays), complete (providers consider the whole person and work as a team to address all health concerns), and transparent. Transparency includes providers communicating costs, risks, and expected outcomes, to the patient and family.

Researchers at Intermountain Healthcare are working to find the best way to implement high-value patient care, and are focusing efforts on how to make it easy for our doctors and nurses to ‘do the right thing’ – from standardizing the way care is delivered (and reducing the variable ways different providers treat patients who may have similar conditions) – to fitting any required new or extra paperwork (or computer work) into existing workflows.

By tracking health outcomes, costs, and compliance with care plans, researchers can help determine the best way to support our patients in living the healthiest lives possible.

Intermountain currently has more than 1,500 active research studies in more than 20 clinical areas. The core of Intermountain research takes place within our 10 clinical programs: Behavioral Health, Cardiovascular, Intensive Medicine, Musculoskeletal, Neurosciences, Oncology, Pediatrics, Primary Care, Surgical Services, and Women & Newborns.
