Eating daily recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables will help reduce the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure while helping prevent obesity.

“Fruits are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and improve digestive health,” says Mindy Crockett, a registered dietitian at Utah Valley Hospital. “Fruits that are fresh and in season are a great option since they typically have better flavor and are easier on the budget.”

In season fruits you should try this summer

    • Raspberry – Raspberries are fat free, cholesterol free, high in fiber and vitamin C. Don’t wash until ready to eat and try them on top of your salad or yogurt
    • Nectarine – Nectarines are low in fat, sodium free and a good source of vitamin C. Look for ones that are firm with a smooth skin.
    • Honeydew melon – Honeydew melons are fat free, cholesterol free and high in vitamin C. Try making a slushy with your honeydew.
    • Watermelon – Watermelon is fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free and high in vitamin A and C. It is the quintessential family gathering fruit of choice. Enjoy it cut in slices or as a punch.
