For Utahns aged 65 and older, falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations, deaths, and traumatic brain injuries. In 2013 alone, 3,200 Utahns aged 65 and older were hospitalized for fall-related injuries. Even without injuries, many seniors develop a fear of falling and, in turn, limit their daily activities. This can result in reduced mobility, decreased strength and balance, and increased risk of falling. However, falling is not an inevitable part of aging. Intermountain Healthcare has partnered with the State Department of Health to provide free fall prevention classes.
