Tips for losing weight and getting long-term results

Avoid fad diets or other methods that promise rapid weight loss. They may work in the short term but usually the weight comes back on after 6-12 months, maybe more. 1-2 lbs/week is an appropriate goal.

Find a method that is sustainable. If what you do in the short term isn’t something you can maintain for years to come, then it probably will not be successful.

Make small, gradual changes – try to change one or two things at a time – such as cooking with more whole grains instead of white grains, or increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables – rather than trying to change everything at once. This can be overwhelming and typically does not result in long term success

For successful weight loss, both nutrition and exercise are important. Be sure to address both of these lifestyle components.

Engage a social network – whether online, work friends, family, church – the more accountability and support you have, the more successful you are likely to be.
