About our program

The purpose of this PGY2 residency is to develop a high-level emergency medicine pharmacist leader with the skills necessary to establish pharmacy services in any health-system emergency department. The graduate of this program will be capable of making medication recommendations in a fast-paced environment, and triaging and treating the most complex patients seen in the emergency department. They will obtain the skills necessary to exercise leadership for emergency medicine pharmacy practice. Graduates will be experienced in teaching health professionals and those training to be health professionals.

Where we train

Intermountain Medical Center is a 504-bed tertiary teaching hospital located in the Salt Lake Valley. It has the busiest emergency department in the state with over 89,000 annual visits and a 30% hospital admission rate. It is a Level I trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center, and a major adult referral center for six surrounding states and more than 75 regional healthcare institutions. It is supported by Life Flight, Intermountain Health’s air medical transport and rescue service. Our emergency department contains 72 beds, including four trauma bays, two specially-designed psychiatric rooms, a separate entrance for hazardous material decontamination teams as well as a chemical isolation room for hazmat emergencies.

Program details

PGY2 training rotations in a variety of settings equip residents with skills necessary to perform confidently as an emergency medicine pharmacist.

Rotations

  • Graduate from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy or foreign equivalent
  • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency or ASHP residency exemption
  • Eligible for Utah pharmacist licensure within the first 90 days of the residency program
  • Willing to complete an interview

  • Successful completion of all required and elective rotations
  • Completion of two formal continuing education presentations
  • Completion of a research project
  • Completion of RQI American Heart Association and Laerdal Medical
  • Precept learners on rotation and teach at local colleges of pharmacy
  • Interact with and teach emergency medicine medical residents
  • Attain "achieved" on at least 80% of all objectives (including 100% of the objectives in competency areas surrounding patient care)

Residents staff on an alternating weekend schedule in the emergency department (averaging 32 hours per month).

Application Deadline

  • All application information must be received prior to 10pm MST on January 2nd, 2025.

  • Current curriculum vitae 
  • Letter of intent addressing why you wish to complete a PGY2 emergency medicine pharmacy residency at Intermountain Healthcare
  • Three letters of recommendation

Candidates selected to the pharmacy residency program are paid a competitive resident salary and receive a complete benefits package.

Resident Salary

  • Approximate PGY2 stipend: $76,000 per year 

Pharmacy Resident Benefits

  • Classified as full-time employees of Intermountain Health
  • Paid a competitive resident salary
  • Eligible to receive a complete benefits package including retirement, health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • PTO is accrued at the rate according to hospital policy (currently approximately 25 days per year). This rate is subject to adjustment. The resident should generally expect to use ≤ 17 days of PTO during the residency year and may not use more than 25 days
  • Access to other employee benefits such as the employee wellness program, Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support, and the employee discount program.

Professional Development

  • Residents attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and an appropriate regional residency conference as determined by the individual sites.
  • PGY2 residents are also generally permitted to attend an applicable specialty conference.
  • In addition, internal CE and other professional development opportunities are offered on a regular basis.
