Standard scrub color for medical assistants changing to dark gray

By 2023 all turquoise scrubs will be discontinued for MAs in the Canyons Region

Beginning January 1, 2023, dark gray will be the designated scrub color for Medical Assistants in the Medical Group—Utah (Canyons region) only. A communication about this announcement was shared in February 2022.

When Intermountain’s standardized scrub policy for clinical caregivers was implemented in 2019, Medical Assistants were assigned designated scrub colors of dark gray and turquoise. The Medical Group surveyed 300 caregivers in all three Utah markets, and 135 caregivers shared feedback.

After a careful review of the surveys, here’s what caregivers told us about each color option of scrubs:
  • Caregivers expressed concerns with turquoise scrubs. They said this is a difficult color to find, as well as the correct shade. Often, Intermountain’s preferred vendor does not have matching tops and bottoms of this color in stock. Some MAs noted they dislike wearing this color. In addition, surveys brought out that sizing is difficult and the turquoise shade stains easily.
  • Caregivers had less concerns with gray scrubs. Caregivers shared the feedback that the color was dull or boring and commented this is the same color as the Rad Tech scrubs.
Caregivers also shared the following feedback about scrubs:
  • Durable, high-quality scrubs cost on average about $80/pair. This is considered a financial burden if they need to replace scrubs.
  • Intermountain’s current vendor does not provide the appropriate colors or sizing as per current Intermountain requirements.
  • Multiple concerns were shared about the unisex scrub bottoms not fitting appropriately.
Based on survey results, caregivers prefer the dark gray scrub color. This will be the designated scrub color for Medical Assistants effective January 1, 2023. Turquoise color scrubs will be phased out by January 2023.

Additional guidelines to help with the transition to dark gray scrubs:
  • Caregivers do not need to wear specific colors on specific days. This is not a requirement or part of Intermountain’s scrubs policy.
  • Autonomy should be provided to caregivers by allowing layering options, which include long sleeve t-shirts with prints and any solid color.
  • Continue to provide the option to wear holiday scrubs in accordance with Intermountain’s current scrubs policy.
  • Resources are available to caregivers for lower-cost scrub purchases. Options include:
    • Purchasing scrubs from contracted vendors that provide an Intermountain discount
    • Redeeming LiVeWell or Recognition Portal dollars to purchase for new scrubs
