To further align research and academics with Intermountain’s strategies and initiatives, Intermountain is combining the Office of Research, the research aspects of Intermountain Precision Genomics, and graduate medical education (GME) into the Office of Research and Academics.

The expanded department will bring all research teams into the Office of Research and Academics, advance our research programs, and continue the work of the Research Guidance Council. This council reviews and advises researchers on grant applications and proposals and aligns and prioritizes them within Intermountain’s strategies of population health and value, access to care and therapeutics, and clinical excellence.

“Intermountain will continue to offer promising investigational therapies to patients, grow our capabilities in healthcare delivery research and precision health, and align and expand graduate medical education,” says Mark Briesacher, MD, senior vice president and chief physician executive. “These areas have a long history of meaningful contributions and have played an important part in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve seen what we can accomplish together, and I look forward to continued success in service to patients, our caregivers, education, and the science of medicine.”

Here are details about the changes:

  • Lincoln Nadauld, MD, PhD, chief of precision health and academics, will lead the Office of Research and Academics and report to Dr. Briesacher.
  • Gary Stone, assistant vice president of precision health services, and David Jones, senior director of scientific programs, will lead research strategy and operations under the direction of the chief of precision health and academics using the Intermountain Operating Model.
  • Mark Nelson, academic services director at Intermountain Medical Center, will work with Dr. Nadauld, the seven GME program and fellowship directors, and many participant site directors in leading and transforming Intermountain’s GME program.
  • Raj Srivastava, MD, has been serving as the interim executive director of the Healthcare Delivery Institute. He’ll continue in this role in an official capacity and will report to Dr. Briesacher. Dr. Srivastava will step down from his role as medical director for research and this role will be replaced in the coming weeks.
  • Greg Elliott, MD, who has served for three years as the medical director of graduate medical education, will step away from that role and continue his clinical work and teaching in pulmonary hypertension at Intermountain Medical Center.
