Bernadette Montoya, RN, made sure a a hospital stay didn't turn into a traumatic situation for a German Shepherd.

When a patient admitted to the neuro critical care unit at Intermountain Medical Center learned that she needed be hospitalized for at a least two weeks, she had a big concern: her “doggy” at home.

The patient had very recently relocated to the Salt Lake Valley and she didn’t know anyone in the area. She wasn’t sure who she could find to help take care of her 14-year-old German Shepherd. When Bernadette Montoya, RN, nurse case manager, heard about the patient’s problem, she volunteered to help. She went to the patient’s house after work that evening and made sure the dog had food and water. She continued to check on the dog twice a day during the patient’s hospitalization.

“Bernadette is the best,” says Tiffany Castagno, nurse practitioner. “She goes above and beyond for our patients on a daily basis and this is just one recent example. I’m in awe of her willingness to help patients.”
