American Fork Hospital offers comprehensive diabetes education classes to those in the community. Classes help participants obtain the tools necessary to better manage diabetes and its effects on their health. Using a team approach to instruction, each class is taught by a registered nurse and registered dietitian who are certified diabetes educators, as well as a pharmacist and an exercise physiologist.
Classes will provide information on topics such as the body’s normal process of using sugar, what is not working right in the body when you have diabetes, blood sugar testing, blood sugar ranges, medications used for diabetes and how they work, exercise benefits/guidelines, what to eat when you have diabetes, how to prevent diabetes-related complications, and the current national standards for diabetes care.
Each class participant will receive a glucose meter, an Intermountain Healthcare Living Well diabetes education book, several instructional handouts and more. We also recommend bringing a support person with you to class, free of charge. As an added bonus, each class member is invited to repeat a class within one year of their original class, which is also free of charge.
