This test determines the amount of calories or energy, expended daily at rest or during sleep. The amount of calories used during rest or sleep is only for the function of vital organs-such as your heart, lungs, nervous system, brain, liver, kidneys, skin and your muscles. Resting Metabolic Rate accounts for the vast majority of your daily caloric needs-up to 75% of the total.
The test also assesses the body's use of carbohydrates, protein and fat so that you can determine your body's needs for optimal health.
Preparing for the Test:
Resting metabolic rate is best conducted while completely at rest. We recommend the following for best test results.
1. Avoid eating for 4 hours prior to the test. Best results are attained after a 12-hour fast.
2. Avoid exercising for a few hours prior to the test.
3. Avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine on the day of the test.
What to Expect:
The test is conducted while lying down in a comfortable position and breathing through a mouthpiece that will analyze the air you exhale. Relax and breathe normally into the mouthpiece for 10-12 minutes. Then the test is completed and the results analyzed. Our dietitian will go over the results with you and help you develop a plan to regulate your dietary intake and effectively use your metabolism and reach an optimal weight.
