There are many causes of dementia or dementia-like symptoms, including reactions to medications, traumatic brain injuries, epilepsy, stroke, metabolic problems and endocrine abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, infections, brain tumors, anoxia or hypoxia, and heart and lung problems. That is why we perform a comprehensive medical work-up for all patients who develop symptoms of dementia.
Degenerative memory disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, progressively destroy nerve cells in the brain, slowly decreasing a person's memory and ability to reason and communicate. There is currently no cure for degenerative memory disorders. The goals of treatment are to help alleviate patients' symptoms and slow their progression. Research studies are ongoing to discover new treatments for these illnesses.
