Managing cancer, as with any life-threatening disease, can be physically, emotionally, and spiritually challenging for you and your loved ones. To support our patients from detection and diagnosis through treatment and recovery, Intermountain Cancer Centers offer a range of supportive therapies and services including:

  • Lymphedema Treatment: The body’s lymphatic system mobilizes disease-fighting cells to fight infection. When it is damaged or blocked from cancer or cancer treatment, buildup of lymph fluid can cause swelling in the arms or legs, causing pain and other symptoms. Lymphedema treatments performed by Intermountain plastic surgeons, occupational therapists, and physical therapists can alleviate symptoms and enhance quality of life.
  • Palliative Care: Supportive treatments to manage the symptoms, pain, and/or stress that accompany the diagnosis or treatment of cancer are defined as palliative care. These can include medicines and Rehabilitation Services (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Therapy).
  • Reconstructive Surgery: Surgically removing tumors and any surrounding healthy tissue can change a person’s physical appearance. This is especially common with lumpectomy or mastectomy for breast cancer. In these instances, reconstructive surgery by an Intermountain plastic surgeon during or after the treatment surgery, as appropriate, can restore the natural look of a patient’s anatomy.
  • Genetic Counseling: If cancer seems to run in your family, you may have an increased risk of cancer. Genetic counselors can help to determine if there is a genetic reason for occurrences of cancer in a family and can discuss the benefits and limitations of seeking genetic testing.
  • Nutrition Counseling: Cancer treatment can greatly affect your diet, and our nutritional counselors can provide recommendations to help meet your needs and alleviate or address any treatment side effects.
  • Spiritual Support: Our hospitals work with local religious leaders to help meet your spiritual needs. We also can help contact clergy of any faith.

Our Cancer Centers offer Supportive Care Clinics, which are walk-in clinics that assist in managing symptoms associated with cancer treatment. These symptoms, such as nausea, infections, fevers, rashes, and constipation, may occur both during and after treatment. It is important to have the symptoms assessed and evaluated by our oncology team.
