I can’t tolerate my prep and I’m throwing up. What should I do?

Try to get as much of the prep down as you can. Drink it through a straw, slow down, refrigerate the prep, drink other fluids with it, or add flavor to it. We can’t do the procedure unless you drink all of the prep, so do your best! Please call us after 6 a.m. if you had problems drinking all of your prep.

Can I add flavor to my Golytely prep?

Yes! Make sure you don’t use anything RED OR PURPLE. You can use Crystal Light, powdered Lemonade, or Kool-Aid.

What dosage of Dulcolax do I need, when taking the Golytely Prep?

Please use the 5mg dosage.

What are examples of clear liquids?

Clear liquids are any liquid that is thin enough that you can see light through it, not the color clear. Remember: NOTHING RED OR PURPLE!! Options are:

  • Juice (Apple, White Grape)
  • Powerade/Gatorade
  • Soda pop
  • Coffee/Tea (NO CREAMER)
  • Broth (any flavor)
  • Jello (NO COOL WHIP OR SOLID FOOD IN IT)
  • Flavored water
  • Popsicles

My stool isn’t clear/light yellow. Is that a problem?

Please call us after 6 a.m. and we will be able to talk to you about it.

Can I still drink fluids after my prep?

Yes! You can drink any clear liquids until you have finished the second dose of your prep.

When do I stop eating and drinking for my Colonoscopy?

Do not eat any solid foods — starting first thing in the morning — the day before your procedure. If you eat any solid food, the day before your procedure (regardless of your arrival time), the doctor will not be able to perform the procedure. You may not have any liquids after you have finished the last dose of your prep.

When do I stop eating/drinking for my EGD (upper scope)?

Stop eating/drinking at midnight.

After I have finished the second dose of my prep, may I chew gum or suck on a hard candy?

Yes.

I didn’t get home in time to start my prep. Can I start taking it late?

Yes, as long as it isn’t more than two hours past the start time. Please start it as soon as possible.

Can I still take my medications?

Please take your medications, as you normally would, the day before your procedure. If you are coming in early in the morning, you may bring your medications with you and take them when you wake up from the procedure. If your appointment is later in the morning/day, you may take your medications six hours before your procedure, with a small amount of water, to get them down. If the second dose of your prep is in the morning, please take your medications an hour before you start that second dose.

I never got my arrival time. What should I do?

Refer to the email that was sent to you when you scheduled your procedure. It will have the arrival time on it. If you don’t have that email, someone is here to answer the phones from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

I never received an email. What should I do?

Please check the junk/spam folder in your email. We are a business and we get sent there frequently. If the email isn’t in your junk/spam folder, please call us during regular business hours and we will verify your email and resend it. If we have already closed for the evening, please refer to the prep instructions on our website.

My pharmacy doesn’t have my prescription. What do I do?

Please call us during business hours and we will call it in for you. It is important to pick up your prep right away, even if your procedure is at a later date.

Do I really need to have someone with me the whole time?

It is important to have someone with you the whole time. If it isn’t possible for someone to stay the whole time, they will need to come back to the department when you are done to go over discharge instructions and drive you home.

Can I drive after my procedure?

No. You will have been sedated for the procedure and because of that you are considered driving under the influence for 12 hours following your procedure.

How long will the procedure take?

Plan on being in the department 2-4 hours to allow for intake and recovery after the procedure. Bring something to read or any device, to help pass the time.

How long after I take the prep, will I start going to the bathroom?

Everyone is different, but you should start within two hours.

I am sick. Should I reschedule my procedure?

If you feel up to it, you don’t need to reschedule. Please ask for a mask at the information desk when you enter the hospital. That way you won’t get other hospital patrons sick.

I started my period. Should I reschedule my procedure?

If you are comfortable with it, you don’t need to reschedule. It doesn’t affect the procedure or bother our doctors.

Can I use an ointment to protect my bottom while doing the prep?

Yes, please do. You will be more comfortable. Anything typically used for diaper rash will work well.
