Our program consists of five state-of-the-art catheterization labs staffed by a team of specialized healthcare professionals. We also have an integrated patient unit located immediately outside of the cath lab area. Here patients are assessed before their procedure and later return for recovery. The Specialty Recovery Unit has 16 patient beds and a dedicated, experienced nursing staff.
The procedures performed in the Cath Lab allow cardiologists to diagnose and treat heart disease. A wire is inserted into the femoral artery in the groin area and threaded through the arterial system and into the arteries that surround and supply blood to the heart. A contrast dye is injected and X-ray pictures are taken to diagnose the disease.
If the problem is diagnosed as blockage of one or more arteries in the heart, then several interventional techniques can be used to open these coronary arteries blocked by plaque. Plaque is a substance that builds up on the artery wall like hard water deposits in a pipe.
We have consistently and effectively improved the treatment of patients with acute heart attack. Industry experts have found that patients suffering heart attack have the best outcomes when the blockage in their arteries are cleared within 90 minutes from their arrival at the hospital. Our program is consistently below the 90 minute mark, including when patients are transferred from other centers. In fact, we're usually able to keep the time it takes from when the patient arrives at the hospital to when their artery is open to under 30 minutes.
