Heart surgery, at times, is the only way to re-establish blood flow to the heart or replace worn valves or critical vessels around the heart. The cardiovascular surgical team at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center performs these critical procedures in specialized cardiothoracic surgical suites. To ensure the best possible care is provided, the team utilizes the latest research and most advanced technology available to help them administer patient-specific treatment. The center has achieved excellent outcomes with a success rate for coronary artery bypass surgery that is among the highest in the country.
During open heart surgery, replacement veins are often used to repair or bypass damaged ones around the patient’s heart. In most cases, these replacement veins are taken from the patient’s leg. Traditionally, this saphenous vein was removed through an incision that ran the entire length of a person’s leg. Now, that vein is removed through a one-inch incision using a scope – a procedure called endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH). This advancement means fewer stitches, less chance for infection, less pain and a faster recovery. The center’s three cardiothoracic surgeons all use this method during surgery, except when complications arise.
An echocardiogram (echo for short) is a cardiac ultrasound that helps assess heart conditions.
Thoracic aortic aneurysm repair is a surgery that repairs a weakened area of the aorta.
An atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) are two types of holes in the heart.
Carotid endarterectomy is a surgery that removes plaque from the carotid artery in your neck.
The MAZE procedure is a heart surgery that treats atrial fibrillation.
Heart valves can be repaired or replaced with mechanical or biological valves.
Ventricular Assist Devices include percutaneous ventricular, left ventricular, and Levitronix CentriMag.
