New Hope for Cancer Patients - Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer

Murray, UT (1/23/2007) — After years of planning, design and construction, the first center on Intermountain Healthcare's new Intermountain Medical Center campus in Murray was unveiled and dedicated at a special ceremony Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007. The event marks a new beacon of hope for cancer patients throughout the Intermountain West.

Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, Jr., and members of his family, including Jon Huntsman, Sr. and Karen Huntsman, joined with community leaders and physicians and leaders from Intermountain Healthcare and the Huntsman Cancer Institute to unveil the Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center at Intermountain Medical Center.

 

 

The three-story, nearly 48,000 square-foot cancer center will provide a full range of state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment options, and multi-disciplinary treatment planning for patients. Cancer patients will also have access to sophisticated surgical techniques available on the medical campus such as upper abdominal surgery, limb perfusion and neurosurgical procedures.

The cancer center will initially provide outpatient radiation treatment starting on Feb. 5 and phase in other services throughout the year. Inpatient surgical services will be available when the remainder of the medical campus opens in late October 2007.

Clinicians at the Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center at Intermountain Medical Center will have a unique opportunity to improve cancer care for patients because of the comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to care, along with a vast array of technological resources, and extensive oncology experts on its medical staff.

Clinicians at the cancer center will collaborate with the Huntsman Cancer Institute on cancer education, research, and clinical cancer care through membership in the Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Care Program.

The new center includes an 11,000 square-foot radiation oncology department that will house two new, sophisticated linear accelerators with cutting-edge capabilities, along with state-of-the-art stereotactic radio surgery and high-dose rate brachytherapy. A new linear accelerator at the center is the first of its kind to be used in Utah, while a new generation gamma knife is only the second to be used in the nation.

Clinicians at the center will coordinate treatment protocols and research activities with leading cancer facilities throughout the United States. Multidisciplinary clinics at the center will allow cancer patients to see entire teams of doctors involved in their care at one time, in one central location. An individual patient with, for example, a tumor of the lungs can see a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, and a thoracic surgeon on the same visit in the same building.

The Jon and Karen Huntsman Cancer Center is one of five centers of excellence on the 100-acre Intermountain Medical Center campus located in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley that will provide the full spectrum of care for patients and their families for decades to come.

All of the other facilities on the campus, including the J.L. Sorenson Heart and Lung Center, the Roy W. and Elizabeth E. Simmons Trauma and Emergency Center, the George S. Dolores Dore Eccles Outpatient Care Center, the J.L. Sorenson Patient Tower, and the Carolyn Barnes Gardner Women's and Newborn Center will open in October.
