Intermountain Trustee Don Norton Awarded for Contributions

Described as "a powerful advocate for sound healthcare policy," H. Don Norton has been awarded Intermountain Healthcare's 2010 Trustee of Excellence Award.

The William N. Jones Trustee of Excellence Award is given annually to Intermountain trustees who have been exceptionally effective in helping Intermountain serve its patients, employees, and communities. Intermountain trustees serve without pay and oversee Intermountain policies, goals, and expectations for management. They ensure Intermountain effectively strives to fulfill its mission of providing excellent healthcare to patients and to the community.

Norton has served on two Intermountain governing boards:  the Urban South Region board responsible for Intermountain Utah Valley hospitals, where he has chaired the Strategic Planning Committee; and the SelectHealth board, where he is vice chair of the Audit and Finance committees. Norton has been an Intermountain trustee since 1997.

Intermountain's Urban South Region includes American Fork Hospital, Orem Community Hospital, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and clinics. SelectHealth is one of Utah's leading health insurers.

Successful in the banking industry, Norton was president and CEO of Far West for many years. When Far West merged with AmercianWest Bank, he became a director and regional division executive with that company.

Fellow volunteer trustees describe him as "an authentic leader," "persuasive," "a voice of reason," and a "powerful advocate for sound healthcare policy." Another said, "He has an extremely positive outlook on life, and he is deeply committed to making meaningful contributions to our community."

Norton was selected from among Intermountain's 450 trustees in recognition of his dedication, leadership, and expertise in guiding the organization. The award is named for William Jones, the founding chairman of Intermountain Healthcare, who served as chairman for 15 years, from its creation in 1975 until 1990.
