Karen Hale and Dr. Lewis Join Board of Trustees

Karen Hale

Karen Hale, director of communications for Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, and Mark R. Lewis, MD, vice chair of Intermountain Medical Group, have recently been named to serve on the Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees.

The Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees comprises 21 Utah residents who volunteer their time without pay to direct the operations of the nonprofit organization. Board members set policy, provide input, and represent the interests of the community. In addition to Intermountain's central Board, the organization is guided by trustees on governing boards for hospitals and other care services, as well as charitable foundation boards.

Former Intermountain Board member Brent J. Christensen, MD, a general surgeon and medical director of the Intermountain Medical Group, recently completed his term of service.

"We are grateful for the leadership and exceptional service given by Dr. Christensen and all our outstanding trustees," said Kem Gardner, chairman of Intermountain's Board of Trustees. "We gladly welcome Karen Hale and Dr. Lewis. Our Board members bring great value and perspective, and we appreciate their generosity in serving with us to help guide Intermountain."

Karen Hale is director of communications for Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker. She has served on Intermountain's Primary Children's Medical Center Board of Trustees since 2008 and was named the chair in 2010. During her two terms in the Utah State Senate (1998-2006), Hale was a member of the Transportation and Public Safety Committee, the Education Committee, and the Public Education Appropriations Subcommittee. She is a co-founder of the Coalition for Quality of Public Education and has been a strong advocate for arts education in the public schools and tobacco prevention programs. Hale is a University of Utah graduate.
