LiVe Launches Humorous Show for Utah Schools

As part of the ongoing LiVe public service campaign to prevent childhood obesity, Intermountain Healthcare is launching a new, high-energy show for Utah schools targeting students ages 11 to 15.

The locally-produced show started this month and expects to reach more than 8,000 Utah students, grades six through nine, in schools across the state. Thought provoking and research proven, LiVe-The 8 Healthy Habits is a funny, high-energy, yet educational, production geared to help students take charge of growing up healthy and fit. Local talent and organizations including the Salt Lake Community College Grand Theater created the show with Intermountain Healthcare.

"We are concerned about the future health of adolescents who struggle with weight issues," says Tamara Sheffield, MD, LiVe spokesperson. "These assemblies present eight healthy, and practical, habits that medical experts agree can help young people build good habits for the rest of their lives."

The play is part of Intermountain's LiVe campaign and is free to Utah schools. Intermountain sponsored a previous version of the production that reached 30,000 Utah students during the last three years. Each school receives a comprehensive follow-up resource kit, including hands-on lesson plans and activity sheets. The LiVe campaign's goal is to change attitudes of adolescents, by making it "cool" to be more active, watch less TV, and make healthier food choices.

Although Utah's obesity rates are better than the national average, obesity is still an issue, especially in Utah children with one in four being overweight or obese. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of teens that are overweight and obese has doubled in the past three decades. Teen obesity can lead to serious health issues like asthma, diabetes and hypertension. Adolescents who are overweight or obese can also face social, psychological and emotional problems.
