Who Has The Healthiest City Leader in the SL Valley?

WHAT:

The winner of the 2012 Intermountain Heart Institute My Heart Challenge contest is.....

Will it be Murray Mayor Dan Snarr, Taylorsville Mayor Russ Wall, South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood, Midvale City Attorney Craig Hall, Salt Lake City Councilman Carlton Christensen or Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon?

For the past 100 days, eight mayors, two city council members, a city attorney and city manager from communities throughout the Salt Lake Valley have been walking, biking, working out, eating fruits and vegetables and tracking their progress as they have competed in the 2012 Intermountain Heart Institute My Heart Challenge contest to determine which Salt Lake Valley city has the healthiest leader.

The winner will be crowned at a celebration ceremony Thursday (6/22) at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. The winner will receive a $1,000 check to go towards improving the health of residents in their community. All participants will be honored for their progress and effort to enhance their health health.

Collectively, the group of leaders dropped 179 pounds, reduced their cholesterol 29 points, their LDL cholesterol 14 points and triglycerides by 46 points. They also saw glucose levels drop by 10 points, blood pressure was down by 13 points (systolic), body fat dropped by 3 percent and waist circumference edged down by 2.6 inches.

“These are significant improvements for a time period of roughly three months,” said Don Lappe, MD, chief of cardiology at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute, and part of the team that developed the Challenge. “These numbers represent a meaningful reduction in the risk of heart disease among these individuals. We are proud of the progress they have made and hope they can serve as a role model to other individuals in our community.”

The My Heart Challenge contest, sponsored by the Intermountain Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center, provided the participants with coaching by a specialized dietitian, an exercise specialist and a series of tests at the beginning and end of the challenge.
