WHAT: In 1978, Intermountain Life Flight, based at LDS Hospital, began helicopter service in Salt Lake City with a few employees and a goal to help those in need. More than three decades and nearly 63,000 patient transports later, the acclaimed air medical and rescue program has reached a medical milestone: 35 years of life-saving service to residents throughout the Intermountain West. Life Flight was the seventh air transport service in the United States when it began operations in 1978. It now serves the entire Intermountain West with seven helicopters, three airplanes, and 248 employees. It also is the only civilian program in the nation to provide hoist rescue capabilities.
To recognize this milestone, Life Flight is bringing together members of their team, as well as former patients, to share their experience with Life Flight for a one-hour media open house on the Life Flight helipad at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
During the event, Life Flight will also announce a Facebook contest where people can enter to win a VIP tour of Life Flight’s fleet and hangar near Salt Lake International Airport in late September. Historical information, photos, videos and statistics about Life Flight’s 35 years in operation will also be provided at the event.
