Ranked #7 among Nation’s Innovators in Technology

Salt Lake City – Intermountain Healthcare was named the #7 innovator as part of this year’s InformationWeek 500 – a list of the top 500 technology innovators in the United States. Intermountain was ranked third of 70 hospitals or healthcare organizations that made the list.

“For 25 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek VP and editor in chief Rob Preston. “Among this year’s top companies, we’re seeing a tremendous amount of innovation around data analytics, mobile computing and Web commerce in particular.”

Intermountain was recognized for its innovative approach to reduce infections. Intermountain teams worked with clinicians to develop and test a watch-like device that includes a temperature sensor, LED visual alert, and radio frequency identification technology. With those components, it detects the use of soap or any cleanser when applied to the skin. It then visually reminds clinicians to wash their hands, while in a patient’s room, by turning red or green.

Since the 1970s, Intermountain has pioneered the use of electronic medical records and is considered a national leader in this area. The records system gives clinicians complete a medical history for individual patients, clinical decision-making support, and a vibrant research tool.
