How can we help?
Utahns are invited to get heart healthy at the state’s largest community
healthy heart fair on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 am to 1 pm.
The Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute’s 2014 free
Community Healthy Heart Fair will be held at Intermountain Medical
Center, 5121 South Cottonwood Street, in Murray.
Free health screenings, including blood pressure and body fat
testing, will be offered at the fair, along with heart risk assessments,
heart-healthy cooking demonstrations and many other fun heart-healthy
activities. The heart fair is the state’s largest healthy heart event,
and continues to grow. Last year, more than 4,000 people attended the
event.
Physician seminars and cooking demonstrations include:
9:15 am: “Live Well and Live Longer” – John Day, MD, cardiologist, Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute.
10:30 am: “What is the New Smoking: Sitting or Sugar? The New Debate” – Liz Joy, MD, and Tamara Sheffield, MD.
Noon: “Heart-Healthy Recipes to Lighten Up
Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner” – Chef Jennifer Burns and Intermountain
Medical Center dietitian Amana Hindoian, RD, CD.
Participants will be able to talk to the region’s leading heart
specialists about their heart health, see the latest heart treatment
technology and learn more about new heart research.
Guests will also receive a health risk assessment to find out if
they’re at risk for heart disease or diabetes. Oxygen saturation, body
fat, heart rate and blood pressure will be measured. Participants will
receive two risk scores: one for diabetes and one for heart disease.
Depending on a person’s score, they may receive a free blood glucose
test, an electrocardiogram (EKG), or both.
“There will be lots of resources and information available at
the fair, so it’s a great opportunity for people to learn how they can
take steps to enhance their heart health,” says Donald Lappe, MD, chief
of cardiology at the Intermountain Heart Institute at Intermountain
Medical Center.
An Intermountain Life Flight medical helicopter and EMS and fire
trucks from Murray City Fire Department will be on display for kids.
There will also be interactive learning stations on nutrition
and heart disease, an area focusing on women and heart disease and the
Go Red for Women campaign, exercise demonstrations, healthy snacks and
CPR demonstrations.
