“Walk With a Doc” from Alta View Hospital on Journey to a Healthier Lifestyle During “Healthy Sandy Shape Up”

Sandy City residents are hitting the pavement this month for the 7th annual Healthy Sandy Shape Up, a free eight-week walking program that helps individuals, couples, and families live healthier lives.

This year’s program includes a new “Walk With a Doc” feature that will allow participants to walk with a physician or other medical expert from Alta View Hospital. It’s a chance to discuss concerns and seek advice about lifestyle changes.

“This program grows each year. Some residents have participated all six years and we continue to see new interest each year,” said Tom Dolan, mayor of Sandy City. “Healthy Sandy Shape Up is an opportunity for individuals to have social support for important health goals, all while enjoying our many parks and trails.”

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” says Eric Gilbert, MD, an Alta View Hospital emergency physician, who helped with the program last year.

“Besides the health benefits of these walks, the program gets people involved in the community and helps to improve relationships with family and friends. It all builds on itself,” he says.

Each walk is held in a different Sandy City park on Mondays starting at 6 p.m.

May 26 — Walk on your own during Memorial Day week
June 2 — Lindsay Park, Alta View Hospital dietitian; Flat Iron Mesa Park, 1700 E. 8600 South
June 9 — Christian Neff, MD, Alta View Hospital emergency physician; Wildflower Park, 9939 S. Wildflower Lane (1835 East)
June 16 — Adam Taintor, MD, Alta View Hospital dermatologist; Falcon Park, 9200 S. 1700 East

Participants will receive a points tracker when they register. They can earn points by completing the weekly walk, doing an additional “challenge” walk or hike later in the week, and by attending a short talk. They can turn in the points card at the end to be eligible for prizes.

Families are welcome. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with family while encouraging exercise. Many trails are stroller and scooter friendly. For more information or to register, visit healthysandy.org. Participants may also register at each walk.

Shape Up Sandy is sponsored by the Healthy Sandy coalition, which includes Alta View Hospital, Sandy City, the Canyons School District, and Salt Lake County Health Department.
