Former Harvard Professor Named Chief Medical Director for Intermountain Healthcare’s SL Valley Hospitals

Mark Ott, MD, has been named Chief Medical Director for Intermountain Healthcare’s Central Region hospitals, which includes Intermountain Medical Center, LDS Hospital, Alta View Hospital, Riverton Hospital and TOSH – The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital.

Dr. Ott will oversee all medical staff administrative responsibilities for the hospitals, including clinical excellence, physician engagement, patient safety, clinical program development, and medical staff planning. He’ll work closely with the medical directors from each of the Central Region hospitals.

Since joining Intermountain Healthcare in 2002, Dr. Ott has served in a number of physician leadership positions, including a six-and-a-half year assignment as Chief of Surgery at Intermountain Medical Center. He also holds a clinical faculty appointment at the University of Utah School of Medicine.

Dr. Ott is a graduate of the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Johns Hopkins in Maryland. After his academic training, he practiced surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and served on the faculty of Harvard University Medical School.

Dr. Ott has been instrumental in developing best practices that have helped Intermountain hospitals reduce surgical infection rates and in implementing national value-based purchasing targets for surgical care. He’s also been instrumental in designing and implementing the SPRING initiative for Intermountain Healthcare, which is aimed at reducing costs through standardization of supplies and processes. Dr. Ott succeeds Bill Hamilton, MD.​​
