World’s Liver Experts Converge on Park City to Address Growing Liver Disease Epidemic Prevalent in Utah

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD or NASH) is on the rise across the world with more than 16 million people expected to be living with the disease – only six percent have been diagnosed.

“NASH has recently surpassed hepatitis as the No. 1 reason a person is on the liver transplant waiting list,” said Dr Charlton. “In Utah, NASH is seen in higher concentrations that other areas, though research is underway to identify potential causes.”

Many people have a build-up of fat in the liver, but when it starts to cause inflammation and damage cells, scarring occurs, which leads to cirrhosis of the body’s second-largest organ.

Presenters at the NASH-TAG Conference (http://www.nash-tag.org/) include leading researchers from around the world, including France, Sweden and Switzerland.
